Melody of the homemaker- Remote residency project with Co.Iki, Tokyo Japan

From the month of July 2020, me and 7 artists from various parts of the world had been working with Tokyo art residency Co.Iki on their first ever remote residency program. The theme of the residency is “Home”, and how we relate the home environment to the current pandemic.

My work “Melody of the homemaker” is my first sound-based+ participatory art experiment, and it combines my experiences in Singapore through three recordings of local homemakers in the kitchen environment with the experiences of people in Tokyo. These recordings are played within co.iki kitchen space, and homemakers who visit co.iki will write down their musings of their role as a homemaker on various surfaces in the kitchen space. Through this work I hope to surface the changing expectations, stereotypes, as well as the struggles homemakers face before and during the pandemic.

Within Co.iki’s residency’s kitchen space, mini whiteboards have been placed around the space for visiting homemakers to respond to the question: What does homemaking mean to you? If willing homemakers would like to participate but they are unable to visit the residency house during this pandemic, they are invited to participate through the open call link below:

Any opinions, thoughts or thoughts are welcome.

For this project, I had also created a music soundtrack from three recordings of three homemakers in Singapore.
The soundtrack can be heard in the following YouTube link, and can be played to accompany you during your household chores!

You can listen to the cooking sound of three Singaporean ” households / husbands ” in the kitchen within the video. Please come and listen while doing household chores at home!
