Aligned with the theme “Disconnected Contemporaries,” curated by John Tung, Shen Jiaqi (b. 1989) reflects on the significant cultural imprint of shopping centres on the Singaporean psyche. Her series investigates shopping malls in Singapore as an evolving metaphor for the nation’s collective consciousness, transitioning from the liberated consumerism of the 1980s to sanctuaries for youth subcultures, and ultimately to present-day structures of commercial monotony.
