Reveries of recess- Solo showcase at Capitol Piazza

Reveries of Recess (Series)
2016
3 paintings, displayed side by side. Oil on Canvas.
 Dimensions Variable

Synopsis of show:
Few places see as much collective creation of memories as the humble school grounds. The recollection of our time spent in the education system is personal but yet communal; consisting of varying experiences as we operate under the encompassing objective of achieving excellence.
Reveries of Recess explores the school environment as a catalyst for reminiscence. It recalls a simpler time when childish daydreams cushion the monotony of classroom routines. Drawing largely from the artist’s recollections of experiences during her school days and her work as a teacher, the exhibition presents the contradictory carefree nature of the child against the obsession for conformity. Will the exchange of compliance for prestige, and imagination for reason be ever present?

Spare the rod, Spoil the child (Series)
2014
Oil on canvas
50x50cm each

A series of two paintings, ‘Spare the rod, Spoil the child’ draws on my own childhood experiences growing up in Singapore. It is a reflection of expectations that are generated from the pressure to perform in the education system.

‘Candy’ canes with colorful handles were a common sight during my childhood, sold in provision stores and wet markets in the heartlands. Our parents would usually punish our misbehavior or academic mistakes with a sharp swish on the palm or feet. When I went looking for them recently, I was surprised that not only were canes becoming a rare sight, the colorful canes are being replaced with  a handle-less, thinner variety, and according to many, are more commonly used as threats, rather than to cane a child physically.
